Knowing what your macros are, or at least having an accurate range based on your current fitness goals is a healthy step in the right direction toward actually reaching those goals. Tracking your macros simply means that instead of simply counting calories you have a more focused approach on the types of nutrients you are fueling your body with, namely; Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fat. Just like fitness programs and general, deciding on your macro nutrient ratios is not a one-size-fits all process. The ratios you use today, may be different than the ratio you use a year from today because your goals may change and so might other factors and circumstances in your life. Ideally you want to focus on Balance, choosing Whole Foods as often as possible, and really paying attention to your portion sizes.
Proteins:
Provide the building blocks of the body’s cell and musculature. These building blocks are called Amino Acids. There are 20 different types of Amino Acids and of those 20, 9 are essential meaning the body can only get them through food. Protein is not just for muscle, though, it is also the primary component of our organs, bones, hair, and tissue.
Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates, or “Carbs” for short, are comprised of starch and sugar that are later broken down into glucose. They act as both the body’s and the brain’s primary source of energy.
Fats:
Fats have long been the “enemy” of all things health and wellness. This is due in large part to flat out MISINFORMATION as fats play a very important role in the body. Fats are needed for brain development, hormone synthesis, enabling the body to absorb soluble vitamins, and many other things. When it comes to fats , and really the other two macros, it’s all about QUALITY over QUANTITY.
